The Ceremony
The 2009 Philip Lawrence Award winners were announced on 8 December at a glittering awards ceremony at BAFTA in London. Over 200 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of a diverse, talented and undeniably deserving group of winners.
The ceremony was hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, and Frances Lawrence was joined by both the Home Secretary and the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families to present the awards. Dazzling entertainment came from Flava and the Hackney African Drumming Group supported by Future Talent. But the stars of the show, as ever, were the young people at its heart.
Sir Trevor McDonald, Chair of The Philip Lawrence Awards judging panel,
“The Philip Lawrence Awards offer winning projects the opportunity to receive extra recognition in their community and a boost to their own motivation and confidence. For some, winning a Philip Lawrence Award is just the start of a string of achievements, for others it’s a culmination of years of hard work.”
Joyce Moseley, Chief Executive of young people’s charity Catch22 which is running this year’s awards
“The competition this year could not have been fiercer and all the groups who entered deserve recognition. However, for those who do get through, the awards shaped up to be a star studded event with celebrities, ministers and a host of truly extraordinary young people.”
