Supporting LGBT young people and challenging homophobic bullying.
Who we are
The Yorkshire Mixtures Group - A small group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Young People
Where we're based
In the Batley Area of Kirklees
When we started
2007
How we started
There was no youth provision within the Kirklees Youth Service specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people and this was seen as a gap in what is on offer for all young people in the area. A group was set up with the help of youth workers to make sure that LGBT young people had a safe space to meet up each week.
Our work
To start with the group was just for LGBT young people to meet up with each other for support and to do fun activities. We decided as a group that we wanted our aims and goals to be more about challenging homophobic bullying and to try and publicise our group to as many young people as possible. We have a play that we are practicing now about the story of a young man who committed suicide because of homophobic bullying at School and aim to be able to perform this at local schools in the area.
Future plans
We want to expand the group and to take our message to more people, organisations and groups within the community. We recently had a re-launch to attract more young people to join, and the Philip Lawrence Award will really help us to take our aims forward.
