How we started
A group of parents disheartened by the lack of activities available for children with disabilities in the Dover area set up Pegasus Playscheme. Who could have imagined 25 years on what it would become, how many families it would support and just how many hearts it would touch.
Our work
Pegasus has grown into a well established community scheme. We provide open access for disabled children and young adults, providing them with opportunities to meet new people, make new friends and experience different activities. Pegasus provide good quality support and services for all children but particularly valuable for the disadvantaged and disabled. Our scheme benefits children and young adults aged between 8yrs and 25yrs with disabilities, access facilities not provided anywhere else in the area. We help our children develop independence. Whilst keeping them active and healthy.
Future plans
Holiday playschemes are relatively low cost for high benefit. Pegasus is unique amongst other forms of children and young people’s provision, promoting accessible and inclusive play.
There is a need to do more for promoting accessible and inclusive play in our district. We want to take more positive steps so that all children can access play with their peers as they wish.
Proposals should ensure the needs of disabled and disadvantaged children and young people are considered in the planning of play services to ensure they are not excluded from participation. We must endeavour to maintain & improve access to play programmes for all children and continue to support these activities.
