A project providing a range of social, educational and recreational activities and opportunities to young people in Bury Park, Luton
Who we are
15 young people as volunteers, 200+ beneficiaries.
Where we're based
Luton, Bedfordshire
When we started
1997
How we started
In April 1984 with the support of Luton Town Football Club a group of young people came together and establish Mitalee Youth Association with a view to address social exclusion faced by them and other young people in the neighbourhood. The Summer School Project was started in 1997 to organise summer holiday activities for young people from one of Luton's most deprived areas.
Our work
The Mitalee Summer School Project provides young people with things to do - including various indoor and outdoor sports activities and games, swimming, trips, martial arts, residential programmes, drama and film production and volunteering opportunities. Workshops cover issues such as drugs awareness and community safety. The young people are trained so they can develop and deliver a range of activities for their peer group. This promotes community cohesion, addresses anti-social behaviours and provides culturally/religiously appropriate activities.
Future plans
2009: The Summer School continues to run each year. Activities include different workshops from radio broadcast training, web design, wealth awareness, and drama workshops, along with trips and visits. The activities within the project are delivered in partnership with a number of other local agencies such as Luton Borough Council, Safer Luton Partnership, Local Police and Schools, On Track and PCT.
Project website
It's entertaining and interesting. It helped me to do something in my spare time. It provides a place for youths and jobs or voluntary jobs for either fun or finance.
