How we started

Antisocial behaviour had driven young people and older residents to breaking point. There was a lack of understanding between them and the bad behaviour of some was leading to prejudice developing against the young people in the community. Two young women decided to confront the problem head-on by developing a project to provide activities and facilities for young people. It was aptly named Making a Difference and its purpose was to give young people a voice, share skills, and develop the area for themselves, future residents and future generations.

Our work

They have trained three young people to run projects in 'hot spots' as well as setting up a young persons' green finger community allotment and a community safety project. The project supports roles models for over 50 young people, and has engaged 100 young people in their allotment project. The young people learnt a variety of skills and found it a rewarding experience all round. Financial support was provided by The Prince's Trust, Nottingham Building Society, and Sheffield Wildlife Trust. By engaging such a wide range of young people, the programme has helped reduce the fear of crime of older and more vulnerable residents. Making a Difference has changed the local environment for the better and will have a positive impact on the future.
