Kotchin, in case you’re wondering, is north London slang for chilling. It suggests a place where you can relax, be safe and not worry. Some people have that at home, many don’t. Kotchin provides not so much a place but more a way of life that welcomes and values people in all their diversity.

Who we are

A racially diverse group of 30 young people from Wood Green, London.

Where we're based

Wood Green, London

When we started

2001

How we started

The project was started when young people decided to set up a group for young people and a space to make their own. They realised there was a threatening atmosphere locally, and no sense of community. They wanted to break down the prejuduces associated with different races, religions and backgrounds.

Our work

The project has successfully opened channels between different communities and encouraged young people not to carry weapons for protection. Supported by the Salvation Army, their work has helped younger generations to grow up with a level of acceptance of people regardless of race, colour or religion. Expanding from four to 30 young people, the group has built friendships and motivated and empowered each other. Not only have they opened their facilities to young mothers and their children, they have grander plans to start a peer mentoring scheme.

Future plans

Were you part of this winning group? We'd love to hear from you about what you're up to now!

Kotchin is like having an extended family. We look out for each other and spend time together.
