A group of Halmer End young people got together as they wanted to change perceptions about young people and initiate community activity.
Who we are
We aim to raise awareness of positive things about young people, to change perceptions of young people and to participate in and initiate community activity in their village.
Where we're based
In Halmer End - a rural village in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Staffordshire
When we started
We started in September 2008
How we started
We approached the Methodist Church in Halmer End to see if they could help us to get off the streets and to help us make a positive contribution to the community. They supported us by arranging a meeting with various people - including Audley Community & Learning Partnership Coordinator, the police, local authorities (both Parish and Borough Councils), Staffordshire County Youth Service and resident's groups - this was arranged so that we could tell everyone what we wanted to do and to find ways of moving forward.
Our work
We work as a group on projects that we hope will benefit the community and give people a positive image of young people. We are currently raising funds to replace a bench in the village and help out at any events. Through this we aim to:- - Change perceptions of young people - Bring everyone in the community together - Gain more rights as an association - Find a place for teens to hang out - Make people have a better idea of our youth group & community
Future plans
We intend to continue and develop community projects and we also want to: - Expand and develop leadership. - Complete our fund-raising for the memorial seat. - Bring in the county youth bus. - Develop a wider relationship with adults and children in the community. - Progress towards opening a community building.
