How we started

Dare 2B Different was set up to support disabled young people to achieve their potential. Our projects aim to enable participants to gain confidence, self-esteem and new skills through supporting communities, e.g. raising funds to build a school for visually impaired children in India. Some of us identified a lack of provision for young people with disabilities in our community so we started a weekly activity group for young people and their peers.

Our work

Young people are involved in every aspect of the projects. We raised funds to visit a school in India for children with learning disabilities and hearing impairments. We won a grant to make a local woodland path so wheelchair users can get involved in environmental projects. We helped to design an inclusive climbing wall - a UK first. We participate in a variety of Awards, e.g. Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and three of us are doing Gateway to Youth Work training.

Future plans

We are setting up another activity group to meet demand - and were given a building by a local scout group that we have completely refurbished. We will continue to break down both physical and mental barriers towards disability.

I have cerebral palsy and I am in a wheelchair. Before Dare 2B Different... I had no interests or hobbies. Now I get involved in lots of things and want to be a youth worker one day
