A skate park created by young people.
Who we are
A group of skaters from Banchory
Where we're based
Banchory, Aberdeenshire
When we started
1996
How we started
Fed up of negative attitudes towards skaters, and friction with local residents, a group of young people decided to take matters into their own hands and create a skatepark.
Our work
Between them, they secured a site, developed plans, gained planning permission and raised funds by writing to local groups and companies, and organising events such as discos and band nights. Four years on, having gained the support of local councillors and community education along the way, the group achieved their objective. The skatepark opened in Easter 2000 and has had a very positive impact on the community. They won praise from the residents of Scott Skinners Square, who had previously been concerned by young people using residential areas for their hobby.
Future plans
Were you part of this winning group? We'd love to hear from you about what you're up to now!
This award has come just at the right time because the group knows it must continue fundraising to maintain the park. This will provide them with great impetus to do that.
